SBB and public transport association ZVV have completed a seven-year modernisation of the double-deck, push-pull DPZ commuter fleet.
Known as project Lion, the CHF 600 million scheme has included the 115 DPZ train sets on Zurich’s S-Bahn.
Work has included the installation of air-conditioning, new passenger information screens and refreshed interiors in first and second class.
Delivered across four different sites, SBB described it as its biggest-ever vehicle modernisation project.
One of the aims was to make the trains more accessible for disabled passengers.
SBB has procured new NDW intermediate carriages with low-floor, double-deck carriages from Siemens and Bombardier to meet current accessibility standards. The trains also have retracting steps at the doors to provide level access.
As well as the DPZ carriages, the project included upgrading the Re420 and Re450 locomotives at maintenance depots in Bellinzona and Yverdon-les-Bains.
A ceremony attended by Zurich government councillor Carmen Walker Späh, ZVV director Franz Kagerbauer and head of SBB passenger services Toni Häne was held in Zurich.
