MTR has been awarded a six-year extension to its concession to operate metro services in the Swedish capital.

MTR Stockholm, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hong Kong operator, has been given the green light to continue operating the Stockholm Metro beyond 2017.

MTR, which recently launched a new open access intercity service between Stockholm and Gothenburg, has been operating the metro since 2009.

The system carries an average of 1.2 million passengers on weekdays.

Kristoffer Tamsons, County Council Commissioner and chairman of the board of transport authority SL, said: “I am very pleased with the MTR’s high performance standards and focus on customer service.

“We look forward to working closely with MTR as we introduce new trains and advanced signalling and further expand the railway network in the coming years.”
