Russia’s Lastochka train has completed a test run between Barnaul and Novosibirsk in the West Siberian Plain – the first time the EMU has travelled east of the Urals.

The run, which was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary if the Novonikolayevsk – Barnaul railway line, was designed to assess the feasibility of operating a regular electric train service on the line.

More than 300 passengers boarded the demonstration train from Barnaul on August 18.
