DLW bags order for 16 locomotives from Bangladesh Railways

The largest diesel-electric locomotive manufacturer in India, Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), has won an order to supply an additional 16 broad gauge locomotives to Bangladesh Railways worth $26.96 million.

Bangladesh Railways ordered 10 BG locomotives earlier this year through RITES, a public-sector company under the Ministry of Railways, which is the nominated agency for dealing with export orders to Bangladesh.

“The delivery of the locomotives is scheduled for 2013-14 and will have a power of 3100 hp,” a DLW official told Rail.co.

DLW has signed the agreement for 16 locomotives, for which it also received 30 per cent of the order value, close to $8.08 million, on August 27, from a RITES team, headed by Sumit Sinha, director technical, V.K. Jain, executive director, and Puneet Kumar, group general manager.

In addition to the 26 locomotives to be supplied to Bangladesh Railways, DLW is also executing an order of six BG locomotives from Sri Lanka Railways worth $8.98 million. These locomotives will be of 2300 hp and will be delivered to Sri Lanka this year.

The Sri Lankan order is being coordinated through IRCON, another public-sector company under the Ministry of Railways.

DLW’s current order book is expected to cross cross $71.90 million in 2012-13 for the supply of various types of locomotives to non railway customers -Indian as well as foreign customers.

As on 2011-12, DLW has exported a total of 105 locomotives to 11 countries.
