Trenitalia awards €1.6bn framework agreement for 135 regional trains

Italian rail operator Trenitalia will acquire up to 135 new regional trains under a new framework agreement announced on July 27.

Successful bidder Hitachi Rail Italy will build a minimum of 70 diesel-electric trains at its plants in Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria as part of the €1.6 billion deal.

Trenitalia said the tender attracted global interest and that the Hitachi Rail subsidiary proved successful because its bid was “the most economically advantageous”.

The new trains are set to improve comfort, reliability and punctuality when they enter service from 2021.
