On 14th November, the IRO South East Area presented Tim Shoveller with a nameplate to thank him for his 6 years as area chairman before he hands over the area chairmanship to Chris Loder at the end of the year.

Tim, 39, continues as a director of the IRO board and has just been appointed as Managing Director of South West Trains.

Previously, he has been MD of East Midlands Trains and Operations Director for Virgin West Coast, Midland Mainline and Wessex Trains.

Under Tim’s chairmanship, the South East Area has evolved significantly, especially in the last 2 years.

With attendance now averaging 75 at the SE’s bi-monthly speaker events and with a number of new initiatives such as the Golden Whistle Awards, Tim has left a significant legacy for the IRO’s benefit.

Tim said: “It’s been a privilege to work with the area council to make the IRO in the South East what it is today. It offers a great programme to all current and aspiring operators.”

Chris Loder works for Deutsche Bahn and is heading the UK project to bring the ICE train to London from Germany.

He has been Vice-Chairman of the IRO SE and now takes over from Tim. Chris has been a member of the IRO for 8 years and has exciting plans for the future.

He commented: “Next year we’ll be doing more to help frontline operators with their careers and we will also be offering more visits and a new initiative for Young Operators.”
