Hitachi has selected Saira Electronics to supply the Energy Metering System for Britain’s new fleet of Super Express Trains.

The technology is used to monitor how much energy each train is drawing from the network so that TOCs can see where it is able to reduce consumption.

Keith Jordan, managing director of Hitachi Rail Europe, said: “Measuring and monitoring energy usage is the first step to putting in place steps to reduce consumption.

“The Energy Metering System will give the companies operating the Super Express Train exactly that information, helping them to work with us in order to reduce the trains’ energy footprint, making the trains more environmentally friendly.”

Hitachi is building an assembly site in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, to deliver 92 new train’s to replace  Intercity 125s on the East Coast Main Line and Great Western Main Line.
