NS is to invest €502 million modernising 45 more of its double-deck EMU fleet.

A total of 242 carriages from NS’s Verlengd InterRegio Materieel (VIRM) fleet will be refurbished in this latest round of upgrades.

Work will be conducted at NS’s Haarlem depot. Design work is already underway.

New features will include modern lighting, new seats and charging points in 1st and 2nd class.

NS plans to complete the first refurbished train by the end of 2020 and, following a test period, will begin series production throughout 2021.

The upgrade will extend the life of the fleet by 20 years, the operator has said.

NS is investing a total of €3 billion in new Sprinter and Intercity trains and upgrading its existing fleet.
