Dutch rail operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) returned to profit in 2014 following the troubles it faced with the withdrawal of the high-speed Fyra fleet.

NS recorded revenues of €4.1 billion last year and a profit after tax of €180 million compared to the €43 million loss incurred in 2013.

As well as a positive financial performance, punctuality improved in 2014 from 90 per cent in 2013 to 92 per cent last year. Passenger numbers increased by 1 per cent to 17.2 billion passenger kilometres. NS also saw a marginal increase in customer satisfaction.

In a statement, NS said it was cautious about 2015, which will see the start of the new 10-year core network operating concession, an increase in track access charges and investment in new trains.
