Few days after Dinesh Trivedi was sacked as Indian Railway Minister on fares hike, Mukul Roy has taken over as the new Railway Minister.

He was sworn recently at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and also holds the portfolio of Minister of State for Shipping.

He also served earlier as Minister of State for Railways, when Mamata Banerjee, the then Railway Minister resigned from the post after becoming Chief Minister of West Bengal.

However, Roy was relieved from the Railway portfolio in a cabinet reshuffle on July 12 the same year, after he defied the orders of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to go to the site of derailment of the Guwahati-Puri Express in Assam on July 11, 2012.

Mukul Roy of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) was elected to Rajya Sabha in April 2006.

During his Parliamentary career, Roy was Member, Committee on Urban Development and Member of Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs during August 2006 to May 2009.

He was Permanent Special Invitee, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Railways during April 2008 to May 2009.
