Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) is preparing to submit a planning application for Metrolink proposals in the Oldham Mumps area, including a new road layout.

Under the proposals, the temporary Metrolink line from Featherstall Road to Oldham Mumps will run at ground level through a new junction at Mumps roundabout, until the town centre Metrolink extension opens in spring 2014.

The plans also include the construction of a tram stop, creating an interchange with bus services, and a park-and-ride site at Mumps, which will be part of the new town centre line.

Prior to submitting the planning application, GMPTE will host two information events to provide people with an opportunity to find out more about the proposals.

The events will be held from 4pm to 7pm at The Link Centre, 140 Union Street, Oldham, OL1 1DZ on Thursday 24 February and Tuesday 1 March.

Philip Purdy, GMPTE’s Metrolink Director, said: “We have worked closely with Oldham Council to develop proposals for the Mumps area.

“This will provide an integrated bus, tram and park-and-ride facility for Oldham town centre as well as a new highway arrangement for Oldham Mumps, which supports the council’s regeneration aspirations for the area.

“We are committed to keeping in touch with residents and businesses while construction on the new Oldham and Rochdale route is ongoing and public information events such as this are a vital part of that work.

“I would encourage people to come along to the events, where they can view the plans for Oldham Mumps and speak with team members on a one-to-one basis to discuss the scheme as well as ask any questions they may have.”

The new Metrolink line to Oldham and Rochdale is due to open as far as Central Park and Oldham Mumps later this year and Rochdale Railway Station in spring next year.
