Hitachi Rail Europe has been awarded a £24 million contract to supply the traffic management system (TMS) for Thameslink’s core network.

The project, which includes options for the South East and London North Eastern programme, will allow GTR to operate 24 trains an hour through central London as part of the £6.5 billion Thameslink programme.

TMS works alongside the signalling system to help manage the network in times of disruption and essentially run the system automatically

Hitachi has previously been involved in delivering similar TMS systems on commuter and Shinkansen lines in Japan.

Rail Minister Claire Perry said: “Today’s announcement isn’t just about new technology, it’s a key way to improve customer journeys by increasing reliability and making sure they have the right information at the right time.

“We have seen huge growth in the number of people travelling by train and this investment will play a key role in keeping those customers moving safely, reliably and comfortably.”
