Hamburg S-Bahn has received backing from the city’s senate to order 12 additional trains to bolster services on the network.

Six of the extra vehicles will be used to extend trains on line S11 from three-car to six-car units and four more will be used to expand nine-car services on line S3 between Neugraben – Innenstadt – Elbgaustraße.

Two of the trains will be kept as reserve stock.

In 2013, Deutsche Bahn (DB) ordered 60 new ET 490 trains from Bombardier, the first of which was delivered to Hamburg for testing last month.

The framework agreement included options for up to 86 additional trains.

All 60 trains from the initial order, which includes a combination of single and dual-voltage vehicles, are due to be in service by the end of 2018.
