City of Gold Coast has committed around $50 million over the next three years to make up its share of the funding for the second phase of the city’s light rail network.

Stage Two involves a 7.3-kilometre extension, connecting Gold Coast University Hospital Station to Helensvale.

Mayor Tom Tate said the city will put in between $40 and $55 million over the next three financial years.

He said: “In many ways, this is a historic day for our city and shows our absolute determination to see this vital second stage of the light rail completed before the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.”

Commissioned in July 2014, the coastal city’s new fleet of 14 yellow trams are the only in the world with built-in surfboard racks.
