A project to upgrade the locomotive fleets of three European freight operators to a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) train control system is to receive EU funding.

Just over €1.6 million is to be committed to the scheme, which is part of an initiative to improve interoperability by creating a single harmonised signalling system across Europe.

Seven locomotives built by Simmering-Graz-Pauker and five Siemens ES64U4 locomotives belonging to CargoServ, RTS Rail Transport Service and Adria Transport will be retrofitted with ETCS Level 2.

The project will enable the locomotives to operate on ERTMS lines in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Switzerland.
