Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC has developed a new driverless monorail train that can operate at temperatures as low as -40℃.

Monorail trains have relatively low-building and purchase costs compared to other rail vehicles but CRRC said that its latest generation of straddle-type monorail train saves on operating costs because of its lightweight design and efficient power supply.

The train comes in three sizes, which have a maximum capacity of 962, 792 and 552, respectively, and can be made into different configurations depending on needs.

The body has a large, curved, streamlined surface. The train uses carbon fibre composite materials on some components to reduce the weight of the vehicle by more than 25 per cent and the energy consumption by 22.7 per cent.

Since the production of the first straddle-type monorail train at CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles in 2004, the 770 monorail trains it has manufactured deliver a daily average passenger capacity of 1.3 million.
