Construction gets underway on Detroit light rail system

Listen to this article

Ground has been broken on a new light rail system in Detroit – seven years after authorities began planning the new network.

The M-1 streetcar project will run north to south for 5.3 kilometres between Larned Street and W. Grand Blvd. The new system will also connect to regional Amtrak services and Detroit’s automated people mover.

M-1 RAIL, the authority delivering the new tram network, said the $140 million project was the first light rail line in the US to be financed by a public-private partnership comprising corporations and local, state and federal governments.

Chairman of M1-RAIL Roger Penske said: “The road to bring a modern streetcar line to Detroit began more than seven years ago and today we’ve reached a major milestone.”

Construction was due to begin in October 2013 and the completion date has been pushed back to late 2016 as a result of the delay.

Delivery of the new trams is expected in late 2015.
