Bus and rail in partnership in Medway and Kent

Links between bus and train services in the Medway Valley have received a major boost with this week’s launch of coordinated publicity, branded vehicles and rail ticket acceptance on 151 route buses.

Under the auspices of the Kent Community Rail Partnership, this promotion and integration of local public transport aims to get more people using trains and buses and fewer using their cars for local journeys.

Welcoming guests to the event, Councillor Maisey said:

“Chatham Historic Dockyard is a world class attraction and it is fitting that we are having this event here today where throughout history many a famous ship has set sail on a great voyage!

“This is a great opportunity to promote, and encourage, patronage on both bus and rail services in the Medway Valley.

“For the first time in this area, the acceptance of rail tickets on the 151 bus route between Strood and Snodland will improve travel options along the whole route especially for the residents of Cuxton and Halling – the ward which I represent.”

Councillor Richard King announced that as a result of KCC’s recent successful bid to the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, additional funding has just been secured for the work of the Kent Community Rail Partnership, the current annual contribution of £10,000 increasing to £25,000 from 2012 until 2015.

Initiatives launched last week include:

  • Local businesses and visitor attractions agreeing to be part of this project, with daytime buses on Bus 151 now extended to provide a regular direct bus into Chatham Historic Dockyard for the first time.
  • Improvements to information at bus stops and publication of a combined bus and rail timetable which will be distributed locally.
  • Southeastern, Nu-Venture and Arriva enabling rail passengers to use their tickets on Bus 151 between Snodland, Halling, Cuxton and Strood.
  • Nu-Venture branding two buses to promote Medway Valley Links.
