British Transport Police calls for volunteers in London

British Transport Police (BTP) is on the look out for ‘public spirited’ Londoners to donate their time and support BTP in their area as part of its Community Volunteer Scheme in London.

Superintendent Dave Roney, who heads the volunteer scheme for BTP, is looking for at least 50 volunteers across London to support BTP on the Tube and DLR networks.

He said: “We hope volunteers from across London will bring their specialist skills, local knowledge and, most importantly, a commitment of time to support their community’s officers and police staff.”

Volunteers will be based at a BTP station most convenient to them, with stations in central London, Wembley Park, Hammersmith, Baker Street, Stockwell, West Ham, Finsbury Park, Heathrow, Aldgate and Poplar.

The busy stations house Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) officers who work alongside other uniformed officers, detectives and other specialist teams.

Volunteers can help with a wide range of activities that support BTP officers on the front line such as crime reduction initiatives and community engagement events.

Superintendent Roney added: “The scheme is in place to complement the police officers and staff we currently have. By taking on volunteers with transferable skills and knowledge, we hope to make more time for police officers to be seen and heard within their communities.

“We expect that our volunteers will provide office support, cover the front desk and assist in the organisation and co-ordination of events within the local community.

“We want to offer a flexible and enjoyable volunteering opportunity that is mutually beneficial.

“One where our volunteers are able to draw upon their skills and experiences from outside the police force, which in turn enriches and improves the service we deliver both as a national organisation and as a presence within our local communities.”

Volunteers can donate as much time as they wish to the scheme but are asked to commit to at least 8 hours a month for 6 months.
