Mercitalia, the freight arm of Italy's state-owned railway, has unveiled plans to convert high-speed passenger trains for freight.

The award follows the board's approval of LINXS as the recommended developer in February earlier this year when a $42 million early works agreement was reached, initiating pre-construction activities.

Gatwick Airport is the sixth busiest UK station outside of London serving 19 million passengers each year. 

In a statement, the European Commission concluded that the proposed transaction "would raise no competition concerns given the negligible overlaps between the companies' activities in the European Economic Area."

Alstom, which has worked in Argentina since 1993, said that the award is its first direct contract from Trenes Argentinos Infraestructura.

The Swiss rolling stock manufacturer said that the expansion will allow it to meet an increased market demand.

It serves the Pujiang area to the south of Shanghai and will connect to the Line 8 interchange at Shendu Highway station.

The new service will travel via Schiphol, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and Charles de Gaulle airport before terminating at the French town, which is located near to Disneyland Paris. 

The development on April 3 follows conditional approval from the German regulator and means that the acquisition has now been approved by all relevant parties. 

Contracts will be awarded once negotiations between parties have concluded.
