Yorkshire charity champion, the late Jane Tomlinson, has been honoured by Northern Rail, who have named a train after the inspirational campaigner.

Northerner Jane was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer in 2000 and given just six months to live. Despite this, through amazing courage and determination, over the next seven years she fought through numerous bouts of chemotherapy to complete a series of gruelling challenges.

Before her death in 2007, Jane raised an incredible £1.85million for various good causes.

Jane’s husband, Mike Tomlinson, joined BBC Sports Presenter and charity patron, Clare Balding at Leeds station to officially unveil the train.

The Jane Tomlinson Appeal was also announcing its latest charity challenge, the Walk for All Festival, which will take place on 14 August this year. The event will encourage people with all levels of walking skill and stamina to take part, with four different routes from 26 miles to just over 4 miles.

Northern is a sponsor of the walking festival and will provide trains from Leeds to Settle, where the walks will begin, and will allow the charity to keep the revenue from ticket sales.

Mike Tomlinson comments: “It’s an honour for Jane to have a train named after her. I can’t tell you how excited I am about the walking event, of all the challenges that we’ve put on, this is the one that’s closest to mine and Jane’s hearts.”

Richard Allan, Area Director for Northern Rail, comments: “The Jane Tomlinson Walk for All is a fantastic idea and we are thrilled to be able to support it by naming a train after Jane. The Settle to Carlisle route is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world and a perfect place to hold this walk. I am sure this will be a very popular challenge for an incredibly worthy charity.”

“We name some of our trains after ‘Great Northerners’ and I cannot think of anyone who deserves this more than Jane.”
