CrossCountry Trains has offered a £5,000 reward to find those responsible for throwing a wooden pallet off a bridge and into the path of an oncoming train.

The windscreen of the train was smashed in the incident on August 25, near to Ferryhill Junction, County Durham.

Sergeant Cheryl Bainbridge from BTP said: “Despite the pallet smashing through the windscreen, remarkably the driver was uninjured. He has understandably been left very shaken by the incident.”

“This was an incredibly irresponsible and dangerous act, and it was lucky no one was injured or killed.

“The driver saw a number of youths on the footbridge and provided a description. Officers immediately searched the area and also conducted house-to-house enquiries but to no avail. Four youths were spoken to in the area but have since been eliminated from the enquiry.”

CrossCountry managing director Andy Cooper said: “The possible consequences of these youths’ actions are truly terrifying and it is lucky our driver escaped uninjured.

“These vandals must be apprehended before they cause an injury or worse, and I would appeal for anyone with information to contact the BTP urgently.”
