Metro Trains Sydney awards 15-year maintenance deal

Metro Trains Sydney (MTS) has awarded Alstom a 15-year maintenance contract for the 36km Sydney Metro Northwest.

This includes the maintenance of Alstom’s 22 six-car Metropolis trainsets – Australia’s first fully automated passenger rail vehicles – Alstom’s Urbalis 400 Communications Based Train Control signalling systems, point machines, operation and maintenance of the depot and the cleaning of the trains.

More than 50 full-time staff, including apprentices, will maintain the system during the operational phase of the project.

MTS is a joint venture between MTR (60 per cent), John Holland (20 per cent) and UGL CIMIC (20 per cent) that will operate the Sydney Metro Northwest in Australia.

Mobilisation of Alstom’s teams is expected to start mid-2018 with the project fully operational in the first half of 2019.

Alstom Australia managing director Mark Coxon said: “Alstom is delighted to be providing long term maintenance support to the iconic Sydney Metro project.

“The award of this contract further strengthens Alstom’s position in the railway maintenance sector in Australia.”
