Nice has inaugurated the first new-generation light rail vehicle for the Cadam-Magnan section of the city’s new tram line.
Designed and built by Alstom at nine of its 12 sites in France, the Citadis X05 tram features an innovative charging system.
This ground-based static charging technology, coupled with the Citadis Ecopack energy storage system, allows the tram to operate without overhead contact lines.
The system automatically charges the tram when stopped at the station during passenger exchange, in complete safety.
Electricity is stored in the onboard Citadis Ecopack devices, guaranteeing the tram’s autonomy between charging points.

The 30m-long trams have a 40 per cent window surface, large individual seats, passenger information systems and improved accessibility with double-doors along the tram’s entire length.
Alstom France president Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud said: “It’s a tremendous source of pride for Alstom and its teams to participate in this project, a catalyst for innovation and an international showcase of French railway sector expertise.
“A new generation of trams, a new charging system, the Nice tram will also be the first connected tram as of spring 2019 with a tram-to-ground Wi-Fi communication system.”
The tram was inaugurated on June 30 in the presence of a number of civic dignitaries and Alstom personnel.
