Passengers at Lichfield City station picked up a free paperback from a Midlands author to mark World Book Day.
The event was organised today by Staffordshire County Council’s library service and train operator London Midland. Writer Paul McDonald, author of ‘Surviving Sting’ and ‘Do I Love You?’ was on hand to give away books for passengers to enjoy on the train.
The books were handed out in the busy morning and evening peak periods. The books can be taken home or left on the train for other people to read.
And commuters not only benefit by getting a free book. Thanks to London Midland they can also enter a competition to win rail tickets to London.
The event marks World Book Day and is a partnership between Staffordshire County Council, London Midland and the West Midlands Readers’ Network. The paperback novels being given away are either donations or unsold items given by publishers.
Staffordshire County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said the event was a great opportunity for people to get involved in literature and reading.
“The daily commute is an ideal time to take some time and enjoy a book. The books being given away are just a sample of what is on offer at Staffordshire’s libraries. We hope that this event will bring people back to reading and encourage them to enjoy the books, IT facilities and friendly welcome on offer at their local library.” he added.
Peter Dobbin, customer service manager at London Midland, said: “Many of our passengers relax on the train and enjoy a good book, so we’re delighted to help promote reading and celebrate World Book Day.”
World Book Day is designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. It is a partnership of publishers, booksellers and interested parties who work together to promote books and reading for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of all.
Other train operating companies have also been celebrating World Book Day, including Virgin Trains and Northern Rail.
